Mental Health and Mental Health Disorder

Mental disorder is a condition caused by interactions of genes and factors such as stress and abuse, leading to impairment of physical functioning. These conditions can be occasional or chronic and affect one’s feelings, thoughts, mood, and behavior. Mental health professionals often diagnose symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, paranoia, and depression. Mental illness is characterized by complications like suicide, cognitive impairment, and social difficulties caused by genetic and environmental factors. The World Health Organization states that mental illness is more prevalent among adults in the United States, Colombia, and the Netherlands.

Mental health entails access to appropriate and better quality health services, leading to improved mental function performance. A healthy mental state results in useful activities, better interpersonal relations with other individuals, and the ability to adjust to changes and manage challenges. Mental health is important in every stage of our lifetime, from childhood to adulthood, as it determines how we relate with others, make choices, and also how we handle problems such as stress. Biological factors like genes, life practices like mistreatment, and family history of mental illness are some of the factors that contribute to mental health problems.

Mental health services are based on objectives that help in reducing suicidal rates and attempts. Reduces proportions of persons who experience major depressive disorders, increasing the proportion of treatments to adults with mental health disorders, increasing depression screening, and reducing adolescent individuals who engage in not recommended eating behaviors to lose weight.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is characterized by frequent nightmares, adverse reactions to stimuli, avoidance of flashbacks of trauma, and depressed mood.

Bipolar disorder is classified as manic episodes that consist of less sleep and touch without realizing it. Depressive episodes consist of loss of energy, lack of motivation, and loss of interest in usual activities. Mood episodes that are associated with suicidal attempts can prolong up to months.

Most people with mental health disabilities are prone to human rights violations and live in poor physical health and poverty situations. This is because most of them are isolated from various development fields, such as education, human rights, emergency responses, employment, and emergency. Such practices render them a vulnerable group as they are subjected to stigma, discrimination, and high sexual and physical abuse rates.

Mentally disabled individuals are restricted from engaging themselves in political, civil, and public affairs and access to essential health services (Simcock, 2017). All these restrictions make their conditions chronic, making some of them die prematurely. The World Health Organization stated that the rate of increase of depression cases among homeless mentally disabled individuals is higher with their issues not addressed.

Health practices and beliefs

Culture and beliefs affect aspects of mental illness, mental health, and patterns of health care. Different groups of people have differences in beliefs about the causes of mental illness, differences in the type of treatment, and the symptoms of the mental disorder. For example, in the study of African-American and Asian-American differences, African-Americans view loss of family and stress over money as causes of mental illness.
